Dr. Michael Frishkopf

Dr. Michael Frishkopf is Professor of Music and Director of the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology at the University of Alberta. His ethnomusicological research centers on Africa (Egypt, Ghana, Liberia, Ethiopia, Tanzania), including Music and Global Health, Islam and Sufism, Immigration and Refugees, Social and Cultural Development, and Architecture. Drawing on his background in mathematics and computer science, he also works on Digital Repositories, Machine Learning, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Social Network Analysis, and Data Sonification. He is a composer and improviser on piano, nay (reed flute), and other instruments, mainly of the Middle East and West Africa.
